Created by Taylor Sheridan, the universe of Yellowstone—a massive American neo-Western drama franchise—has become one of the biggest television phenomenons of recent times. With a cast across its different installments that has included figures like Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren, and Sam Elliott, the franchise keeps expanding. One of its most recent bets is “Dutton Ranch”, released on May 15, 2026 on Paramount+ (the streaming platform), which quickly established itself as the platform's most successful original series launch.
Actor Ed Harris, 75 years old and a four-time Oscar nominee, joined the cast playing Everett McKinney, a Vietnam veteran and veterinarian. However, his experience on set was not what he expected. In an interview with Variety during the premiere of his movie “The Dink”, the actor confessed that before signing his contract for two seasons, he was promised he would be one of the four main characters. “And that wasn't really the case,” lamented Harris, who felt “underused and inconsequential.”
The disenchantment was such that halfway through the first season, he asked his team: “Get me the hell out of here right now.” Despite seriously considering abandoning the production, he ultimately continued filming.
One of the most tense moments for Harris was the deletion of a scene where his character was going to sing in a bar, interacting with Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). “I walk up to the microphone and they cut it. They cut the song. And I think: 'Screw everybody,'” the actor recounted. The production justified the cut by arguing that the sequence was “too cheerful” for the dark tone with which the episode ended.
Despite the clashes, the actor acknowledged that, upon seeing the final result of the episodes, his character seemed to have more weight than he perceived during filming. Additionally, according to Deadline, production for the second season is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2027, and Harris is already confirmed to return. Producers assured him that Everett McKinney will have a greater prominence in the next installment, which dispels doubts about his continuity.
Alongside Harris, the series features an outstanding cast including Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who reprise their iconic roles as Beth and Rip, moving from Montana to South Texas to start a new life. They are joined by Annette Bening, Jai Courtney, Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Alyn Lind. The first season aired its final episode on July 3, 2026, and fans are eagerly awaiting the continuation of this story in the fascinating universe of Taylor Sheridan.
