The investigation into the tragic femicide of Natalia Cruz (37) has taken a decisive turn. According to reports from Infobae and TN, the Justice system in Salta has charged ten police officers with alleged failure to enforce a court-ordered protection detail and for creating a false report to conceal their negligence.
On February 17, 2026, Natalia was attacked with a knife by her ex-partner, Daniel Orlando Serapio, at her home in the Luz y Fuerza neighborhood of Campo Quijano, a town in the province of Salta. After the attack, the perpetrator confessed to the victim's mother and fled, remaining at large for two weeks until he was found hiding in a cave in the pre-mountain range. Serapio has been in pretrial detention since March 2026.
The most disturbing aspect of the case is that Natalia had a court order from the 2nd Nomination Family and Gender Violence Court mandating a fixed police detail at her residence. However, according to the Specialized Femicide Unit (UFEM), personnel from Police Station No. 7, despite knowing about the order, never implemented the protection.
Prosecutors María Luján Sodero Calvet (head of UFEM) and Claudia Geria (Human Rights Prosecutor's Office) are leading the investigation. To deepen the inquiry, the Attorney General's Office of Salta formed a joint unit that revealed alleged systematic irregularities in the handling of gender violence cases during January and February 2026.
The charges are divided according to the degree of responsibility:
Natalia's tragedy has an even more painful context. In 2017, she had been photographed crying after the femicide of her sister. Hours before being killed, Natalia had traveled to Salta city to file a new complaint and request a restraining order, but was told no personnel were available to assist her.
In addition to the criminal investigation, the police institution has initiated an internal administrative process to determine responsibilities and restructure resources in the Valle de Lerma region, an area of special concern for gender violence situations. Combined with the pretrial detention of the femicide perpetrator and two people charged with aggravated concealment during his escape, these measures aim to ensure that such serious acts do not go unpunished and that the protection system improves to save lives in the future.
