The afternoon of Monday, June 22, 2026 turned tragic in Mar del Plata, Argentina's most famous beach resort city. A bus from line 532 lost control, mounted the sidewalk, and ran over a group of people waiting at bus stops in front of the Bristol Skatepark, located at the intersection of the coastal boulevard and Rivadavia Street.
The incident occurred shortly after 7:00 PM. According to initial reports, the vehicle struck several people in an area where multiple bus lines converge—a high-traffic zone for both tourists and locals. The impact destroyed a bus shelter and part of the skatepark's perimeter fence.
An extensive emergency operation was immediately deployed, involving at least five ambulances from the municipal SAME (Emergency Medical Assistance System) and the provincial SIES, along with Firefighters, Civil Defense, Coast Guard (Prefectura), Scientific Police, and Municipal Traffic authorities. Rescue efforts focused on people trapped beneath the bus.
Official sources preliminarily confirmed that an 18-year-old woman died at the scene. At least six other people were injured and transported to the Hospital Interzonal General de Agudos (HIGA)—the main public hospital in the city. Among the injured:
The case was assigned to Prosecutor's Office No. 11 for Criminal Negligence, headed by prosecutor Germán Vera Tapia. Investigators' main hypothesis centers on a possible mechanical failure in the bus, specifically in the power steering system or brakes.
The bus driver was provisionally transferred to the Casino Sub-Police Station. The case is classified as Manslaughter and Negligent Injuries.
Municipal Security Secretary Rodrigo Goncalvez was also present at the scene.
Mar del Plata is Argentina's premier beach destination, located about 400 km (250 miles) south of Buenos Aires. The Bristol Skatepark sits in one of the most transited areas of the city's central coast, where people gather to wait for buses, practice sports, and enjoy seaside walks. The area hosts multiple urban bus line stops.
