Mexico Demands Justice for Lorenzo Salgado and Migrants in the US

14/07/2026 16:11 - Internacionales

With the hope that justice will be served and human rights respected, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on July 13, 2026 that her government will demand criminal complaints in the United States for the deaths of 17 Mexican migrants during recent immigration policies. Among the victims is Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old builder who was fatally shot by agents from ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the US agency responsible for immigration enforcement) in Houston.

The Case of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who had lived in the US for nearly 35 years and had no criminal record, lost his life on July 7, 2026 while on his way to work in Houston, Texas. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Salgado Araujo allegedly used his vehicle to attempt to run over an ICE officer.

Witnesses Seek the Truth

The three men who were with Lorenzo in the truck disputed the official account, bringing hope for clarifying the case. They stated he was shot through the passenger window and that the officer was not in danger. His family affirmed that Lorenzo was about to obtain his legal status and knew how to act during an immigration checkpoint, demonstrating his intention to do things the right way.

The community has shown immense support. US Congressman Christian Menefee stated during a vigil on July 11, 2026 that they will seek an independent investigation to honor his memory.

A Firm Response from Mexico

Sheinbaum described the incident as an outrageous case but focused her message on seeking solutions and justice through legal channels. We cannot simply continue with diplomatic letters that have yielded no results, she stated. The request will be filed with state prosecutors in the US and the Department of Justice to push for criminal charges, opening a door toward transparency and accountability.

Context of Diplomatic Relations

Relations between the two countries are at a defining moment. In April 2026, unauthorized CIA operations in Mexico were reported. Additionally, the US accused Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya of alleged links to the local drug cartel. However, Mexico has refused to extradite him due to a lack of evidence, prioritizing national sovereignty and dialogue.
