A Sobering Reminder in One of the World’s Most Breathtaking Settings

Iguazu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site straddling the border between Argentina and Brazil, is one of South America’s most spectacular natural wonders. Yet the raw power of nature demands constant respect and caution.

On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, around 12:20 p.m. local time, a tragic incident shook the Brazilian side of the national park. A tourist boat operated by Macuco Safari capsized during a routine excursion, resulting in the death of a 26-year-old Dutch tourist and injuries to two other passengers.

What Is the Macuco Safari?

Macuco Safari is one of the most popular and thrilling excursions at Iguazu Falls. It involves riding high-speed inflatable boats upstream to the base of the waterfalls, where passengers experience the full force of the cascades up close. The adrenaline rush is part of the appeal, but the activity requires strict safety protocols, especially when river conditions change.

The Accident and Rescue Efforts

According to official reports and local media such as TN and Infobae, the boat was carrying eight people: six Dutch tourists (all from the same family) and two crew members (pilot and co-pilot).

A key factor in the incident was the unusually high flow of the Iguazu River. Due to recent heavy rains in the region, the river’s discharge reached 4.3 million liters per second — far above the normal average of 1.5 million liters per second. This extreme condition made navigation difficult and complicated the rescue operation.

The 26-year-old man suffered drowning-related asphyxia and subsequent cardiac arrest. Although park staff provided immediate first aid and he was rushed to the Padre Germano Lauck Municipal Hospital in Foz do Iguaçu, doctors were unable to revive him.

The two other injured passengers were relatives of the deceased. A 49-year-old man remained conscious and stable, while his son-in-law was evaluated but did not require hospitalization.

Investigation and Safety Measures

In response to the tragedy, Macuco Safari issued a statement expressing condolences to the family and confirming that it is providing assistance to those affected. As a preventive measure and to facilitate judicial investigations, the company suspended its operations for three days. Another operator, Jungle Explorer, also temporarily halted its tours.

The River Paraná Port Authority and Brazilian authorities are investigating the case to determine whether negligence, failure to follow safety protocols, or unavoidable environmental factors caused the accident. The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) confirmed that the concessionaire had all its documentation in order.
