A Case That Shakes Resistencia
The city of Resistencia, capital of the northern Argentine province of Chaco, is in mourning after the tragic death of Matías Julián Álvarez Guardia, a 29-year-old man killed on August 2, 2026.
According to local media such as TN and Infobae, the main suspect is his partner, Victoria Luz Cantero (25), who remains in custody pending questioning by the courts.
The Events of That Sunday Morning
The tragedy took place at a house on Donovan Street at number 1400. According to the victim's family, Cantero allegedly entered the property early Sunday morning, reportedly using a copy of the keys, and attacked Álvarez Guardia while he was asleep. "He didn't have time to defend himself," said Noelia Guardia, the victim's sister, through tears, noting that the stab wound to the right side of the chest was precise.
After the attack, the suspect's brother, Facundo Cantero — who was also a friend of the victim — rushed Matías to the Julio C. Perrando Hospital in a dark gray Chevrolet Aveo (license plate LJU-372). According to Diario Norte, the vehicle was seized on August 3 by order of the Criminal Prosecutor's Office No. 2 for forensic analysis.
Despite emergency surgery, the young man died in the operating room four minutes after arrival, due to hypovolemic shock and cardiorespiratory arrest caused by a jugular-subclavian injury.
A History of Violence and Social Media Warnings
Matías's family described the approximately two-and-a-half-year relationship as marked by jealousy, control, and physical violence. "He filed complaints and requested a restraining order, but it didn't go through. She would break his phones. She even smashed his truck with a brick," Noelia said. Another sister, Leticia, added that Matías often showed up with bruises, which he would excuse to protect her, having been raised with the belief that you never lay a hand on a woman.
Furthermore, posts from Cantero's social media from December 2025 gained attention: "I just want to love and mistreat the same man for the rest of my life" and "I don't understand women who carry a Labubu in their bag; I would carry a Glock." Her profiles were taken down on Monday afternoon.
The Defense and Judicial Process
Defense attorney Marco Molero, who represents Cantero alongside Lucas Ignacio Bosch, described his client as "a subdued, distressed, and sorrowful girl" and denied any prior criminal record. He also suggested a possible defense line, hinting that the attack might have been a "defensive maneuver" in response to a prior aggression.
Prosecutor Ana Graciela González de Pacce is gathering witness statements. In her first statement, Cantero reportedly claimed she received a call from a friend and arrived to find her boyfriend wounded on the sidewalk. On Tuesday, August 4, the accused will be transferred to the courthouse to give a statement as a defendant charged with aggravated homicide due to the relationship, a crime that carries a life sentence.
