A Finale That Shakes Westeros
The third season of House of the Dragon came to an end on August 9, 2026, leaving fans stunned. The eighth episode, available simultaneously on HBO and Max at 10:00 PM Argentina time, marked a definitive turning point in the Dance of the Dragons.
The HBO series managed to regain its momentum after a slow second season, closing this season with the epic and destruction everyone expected. The Targaryen civil war stopped being a chess game and became an open and ruthless conflict.
Rhaenyra's Transformation: From Queen to Tyrant
The return of Aegon II with his dragon Sunfyre put Rhaenyra on the ropes. The death of Helaena Targaryen, who committed suicide by throwing herself from a window after being force-fed, was the point of no return. Helaena left a prophetic tapestry depicting Rhaenyra sitting on the Iron Throne, surrounded by fire and blood.
Rhaenyra, played by Emma D'Arcy, abandons her quest for peaceful leadership and aligns with her husband Daemon's philosophy: fire and blood. In a shocking scene, she kills the High Septon for refusing to anoint her and proclaims herself before the people as the messiah foretold in the Prince That Was Promised prophecy.
If we want to protect democracy, which seems increasingly fragile, we have to understand the behaviors of dictatorial leaders. And this is an opportunity for the audience to do that, D'Arcy analyzed in an exclusive conference.
The Brutal Battle of Tumbleton
The climax of the episode came with the Battle of Tumbleton. Daemon's forces advanced against Ormund Hightower's army. The situation spiraled out of control when Ulf the White, one of Rhaenyra's dragon riders, went mad and began burning everything in his path, including the Hightowers themselves.
The battle left a scene of total destruction, corpses, and shattered families. Daemon watched with horror the consequences of resolving political conflicts with dragons, while Rhaenyra lost a large part of her advantage. The so-called Treason of Tumbleton changes the balance of power forever.
What's Next for the Game of Thrones Universe?
Showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed that the fourth season of House of the Dragon, scheduled for 2028, will be the last. Condal explained that the difference from the original series is that here we see a dynasty destroying itself from within due to ego, pride, and power, in a Shakespearean tragedy.
Additionally, the universe created by George R.R. Martin will continue to expand. In 2027, the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere, adapting the novella The Sworn Sword. There are also projects in development such as a film about Aegon the Conqueror, 10,000 Ships, and the animated series The Nine Voyages and The Golden Empire of Yi Ti.
