A Secret That Lasted Years
Sandra Bullock, 62, has broken her silence about the death of her partner, photographer Bryan Randall, who passed away on August 5, 2023, at age 57 after a private battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In an emotional interview on the SmartLess podcast — hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett — the Oscar-winning actress explained for the first time why she kept the diagnosis hidden: "He asked me not to tell. I know why he asked me", she confessed.
The actress revealed she strictly honored Randall's wish, but that decision came at a high emotional cost. For a long time, only her sister Gesine Bullock-Prado knew about the illness. Bullock described the experience as "traumatic" and admitted that the privacy "isolated her in the process", all while caring for her two children, Louis and Laila, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
'My Person Left Long Before the Body'
One of the most striking moments of the interview was when Bullock said she began grieving Bryan four years before his death. "I think, in the stage of his life he was in, both physically and mentally, I started mourning Brian's death four years before he passed. Something had changed", she said. She added: "My person left long before the body. I don't think I processed it until after his death, because you get caught up in a kind of conveyor belt".
Over time, Bullock found support in her inner circle: besides her sister, she leaned on her friends Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, Jason Bateman's wife. The actress also drastically reduced her public presence after Randall's passing, but according to sources close to her cited by People in April 2026, she is already gradually returning to her career, with projects like "Practical Magic 2".
An Eight-Year Love Story
Bullock and Randall met in January 2015, when he photographed the fifth birthday party of Louis, the actress's adopted son. Soon after, they began a relationship, and their first public appearance as a couple was in October of that year, at the premiere of the film Our Brand Is Crisis. In December 2021, Bullock called him "the love of my life" on the program Red Table Talk.
Randall was actively involved in raising Louis (16) and Laila (12), Bullock's two adopted children. He was also the father of an older daughter, Skylar (32), from a previous relationship. The relationship lasted eight years, until the photographer's death.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells responsible for muscle control. As the disease progresses, people progressively lose the ability to speak, eat, move, and breathe. There is currently no cure, and it is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in honor of the famous baseball player who suffered from it.
After Randall's death, his family released a statement thanking the doctors and nurses who cared for him, and asked for privacy during their grief. Bullock's sister, Gesine, also highlighted the role of the actress and the team of caregivers on social media.
