A family from Alejandro Korn, a city in the Buenos Aires province, was tragically struck by misfortune during their holidays in Argentina's northwest. On Sunday, August 16, 2026, the rented Toyota SW4 they were traveling in veered off the road at kilometer 30 of Ruta Nacional 52 and tumbled down a precipice of approximately 80 meters in the infamous Cuesta de Lipán.
Who Was the Victim
Silvia Rosana Amaro, aged 58, was a native of Alejandro Korn, located in the San Vicente district. Together with her husband Narciso González (60), she managed a local hardware store. According to her social media profile, she often traveled with her family to various tourist destinations across the country.
Accompanying her were her husband, their two children, Favio Hernán González (31) and Lorena Paola González (33), and Lorena's partner, Augusto Coda (34). Local reports indicate that Narciso and Favio run an auto parts shop in their neighborhood, while Lorena and Augusto worked together in a financial services company and resided in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Villa del Parque.
The Accident and Rescue Operation
The crash occurred on the Cuesta de Lipán, a winding mountain corridor that connects the Quebrada de Humahuaca with the Puna region. Known for its steep slopes and sharp curves, the road demands extreme caution from drivers. Witnesses alerted the local police (Seccional 57°) after spotting the mangled vehicle with passengers trapped inside.
Emergency teams from SAME (the provincial emergency service) and Volunteer Firefighters of Maimará rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, rescuers confirmed the instant death of Silvia Rosana Amaro due to severe injuries sustained during the fall. The other four occupants were urgently transferred to Hospital Pablo Soria in San Salvador de Jujuy.
Health Status of the Injured
The couple's eldest daughter, Lorena Paola González, suffered the most critical condition from the outset: severe traumatic brain injury, thoracic and abdominal trauma, and loss of consciousness. Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, brain death was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon, August 19.
The remaining family members are in stable condition:
- Favio Hernán González (31): subluxation of the left ankle and a fractured humerus.
- Augusto Coda (34): fractured humerus, moderate traumatic brain injury, and a right pneumothorax requiring pleural treatment.
- Narciso González (60): pelvic diastasis and facial trauma, showing favorable progress from his initial state.
It was later confirmed that Favio was driving at the time, but he has no memory of how the accident occurred.
Ongoing Investigation
Following the directive of the on-duty prosecutor, forensic experts from the Jujuy Police have initiated technical analyses to determine the cause of the accident. The investigation aims to establish whether a mechanical failure of the rented vehicle, driver error, or adverse weather and road conditions were responsible.
This tragic event highlights the inherent dangers of high-altitude winding roads when unexpected circumstances arise. The grief from this loss has deeply affected both the Alejandro Korn community and the wider public, casting a shadow over what was meant to be a restful holiday.
