Boca Juniors Edge Past O'Higgins in Dramatic Penalty Shootout

On July 30, 2026, at the Estadio El Teniente in Rancagua, Chile, Boca Juniors booked their place in the Round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana (South America's second-tier club competition, equivalent to the UEFA Europa League) after a nail-biting penalty shootout (4-3) against Chilean side O'Higgins. The aggregate score was 1-1, as O'Higgins had won the second leg 1-0 with a goal from Francisco González.

The night was filled with tension, especially when young Boca midfielder Tomás Aranda stepped up to take the fourth penalty of the shootout with a chance to seal the victory.

The Missed Penalty and Team Support

With the opportunity to clinch qualification, Aranda opted for a risky 'panenka' (a chipped penalty, named after Czech player Antonín Panenka). O'Higgins goalkeeper Omar Carabalí read the intention and caught the ball easily, sparking local celebrations and silence among the visiting fans.

Despite some O'Higgins players criticizing the showboating gesture, Boca captain Leandro Paredes was among the first to console and support the visibly shaken youngster. According to reports from TN, Paredes praised Aranda's courage but reminded him that 'there are moments and moments,' considering the error a youthful mistake that will serve as a lesson.

Social media post: Hours later, putting the tough moment behind him, Aranda shared an Instagram story focusing on the team's achievement. He celebrated the advancement to the Round of 16 and showed his commitment, receiving support from fans who appreciate the bravery of young talents.

Self-Criticism and What's Next

Boca's head coach, Rodolfo Arruabarrena, delivered a strong self-criticism in the post-match press conference, acknowledging the team's mental weaknesses and lack of intensity. As detailed by TyC Sports, 'El Vasco' was blunt in his analysis and warned that the team must improve to advance further. Additionally, Boca players decided not to give statements to official TV, which could result in a fine from CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) of up to $10,000 USD per player.

In the shootout, Boca's scorers were Paredes, Merentiel, Figal, and Lautaro Blanco. For O'Higgins, González, Castillo, and Brizuela converted; Vecino missed, and Boca's goalkeeper saved Pavez's attempt. The referee was Colombian Wilmar Roldán.

Next Challenge: Deportivo Recoleta (Paraguay)

With qualification secured, Boca Juniors now turn their attention to the Round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana, where they will face Deportivo Recoleta from Paraguay. The two-legged tie is scheduled for August 11–20, 2026, with hopes of continuing their international campaign.
