River Plate Signs 19-Year-Old Midfielder Tobías Andrada as Seventh Reinforcement

Published on July 31, 2026

In a bid to turn around a difficult season, River Plate—one of Argentina’s most iconic football clubs—has moved quickly in the transfer market. On Friday, July 31, 2026, the Buenos Aires side finalized the signing of Tobías Andrada, a promising 19-year-old midfielder from Vélez Sarsfield. Andrada passed his medical examination and is set to put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2030.

Why River Needed This Signing

River Plate, under coach Eduardo Coudet (known as “Chacho”), is enduring a rough patch. The team has suffered four consecutive defeats: losing the Apertura final to Belgrano, being knocked out of the Copa Argentina by Aldosivi, and dropping the first two matches of the Clausura tournament. With a home game against Rosario Central coming up on Sunday, the club’s board is desperate to inject new life into the squad. Andrada is seen as a key piece to help reverse the slide.

Transfer Details

The deal is reported to be worth between $6 million USD (for 70% of the player’s economic rights) and $7.5 million USD (for 80%), depending on the source. The contract runs for four seasons, through June 2030, and may include performance-based add-ons. Andrada becomes River’s seventh signing of the current transfer window.

Who Is Tobías Andrada?

Andrada is a versatile central midfielder who came through Vélez’s youth academy. He has already made 36 appearances in Argentina’s top division, scoring three goals. He was a standout for the Argentina U-20 national team at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, where his performances caught the eye of scouts. His natural position is as a box-to-box “8”, but he can also play deeper or as an attacking midfielder. Known for his stamina, ball control, and ability to receive passes between the lines, River hopes he will add more goals to his game as he develops.

River Plate’s Seven Reinforcements

With Andrada’s arrival, River has now brought in seven new players this window. Here’s the full list:

  • 1. Nicolás Otamendi (Defender) – veteran Argentine international, returns to River after years abroad.
  • 2. Mauro Arambarri (Midfielder) – experienced Uruguayan midfielder, adds steel in the middle.
  • 3. Giovanni González (Defender) – Uruguayan right-back, provides pace and crossing.
  • 4. Ángel Correa (Forward) – Argentine international, returns from Atlético Madrid to boost attack.
  • 5. Lucas Beltrán (Forward) – young striker, already a fan favorite after a loan spell.
  • 6. Rafael Santos Borré (Forward) – Colombian striker, returns to River after a stint in Brazil.
  • 7. Tobías Andrada (Midfielder) – the new young hope from Vélez.

Andrada is expected to join training on Saturday, though a minor muscle issue will be assessed before the weekend match. The Monumental stadium is buzzing with anticipation as fans hope the young star can help turn the tide.
