George Russell Dominates Zandvoort Sprint
The British Mercedes driver converted his pole position into a dominant victory in the Formula 1 Sprint at Zandvoort, held on August 22, 2026 at the Dutch circuit. He finished ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and McLaren's Lando Norris, with a late rain shower adding drama just as Russell took the checkered flag.
With a 1.360-second gap over Leclerc, Russell controlled the pressure from his rivals in the early stages. Despite attempts by Leclerc and Norris to close in, the Brit kept his cool and claimed the 8 points for victory. The podium was completed by the Monegasque Leclerc (+1.360s) and Norris (+5.196s), who held off a late charge from rookie Kimi Antonelli by less than a second.
Battle for the Rest of the Points
Mercedes' young star Kimi Antonelli finished 4th, just 0.3s behind Norris, while Oscar Piastri completed the top five for McLaren. Local hero Max Verstappen was sixth for Red Bull, ahead of Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine), sealing the final scoring positions.
The race marked the return from the summer break with plenty of action. Notably, Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso started from the pit lane after changes to their cars, while Nico Hulkenberg briefly retired due to a power issue but later rejoined the race.
Colapinto Gives Argentine Fans Hope
Argentine driver Franco Colapinto, in his Alpine, finished the Sprint in 12th place, after losing a few positions at the start. He gained a spot over Yuki Tsunoda in the opening lap and was battling for 11th with Liam Lawson before finishing in his final slot. While he didn't score points, his performance was steady and gives hope for Sunday's Grand Prix.
