An Unprecedented Investment
In a move that caught the attention of global energy markets, Peter Thiel's hedge fund, Thiel Macro LLC, purchased 1,189,792 shares of Vista Energy, the Argentine oil company led by Miguel Galuccio. The stake, valued at approximately US$ 76 million as of June 30, 2026, represents about 1% of the company's capital. This is the fund's second-largest holding after Amazon, according to the quarterly 13F report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on August 14, 2026. The news was first reported by Bloomberg and echoed by Argentine media including La Nación, EconoJournal, and Rosario3.
Vista Energy: The Jewel of Vaca Muerta
Vista Energy, founded in 2017 by Miguel Galuccio (former President and CEO of YPF), has become the largest oil exporter in Argentina. The company operates in the Vaca Muerta formation, one of the world's largest shale oil and gas reserves, comparable in size to the Permian Basin in the United States. Key metrics for Q2 2026 include:
- Total production: 156,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d), up 32% year-over-year.
- Oil production: 135,000 barrels per day, a 33% increase from the same period in 2025.
- Lifting cost: US$ 4.5 per barrel, 4% lower than the previous year, showcasing operational efficiency.
- Exports: Surged 54% year-over-year to 8.6 million barrels in the quarter, representing 72% of total oil sales.
- Total revenue: US$ 1,150 million, up 89% from the prior year.
The company's main asset is Bajada del Palo Oeste, but it also operates in La Amarga Chica, Bajada del Palo Este, and Aguada Federal. Just last month, Vista applied to join Argentina's RIGI (Large Investment Incentive Regime) to develop the Bandurria Norte block, with an estimated investment of US$ 5.8 billion.
Who Is Peter Thiel?
Born in Germany and raised in the United States, Peter Thiel is a towering figure in Silicon Valley. With a net worth estimated at US$ 30 billion (Forbes), he co-founded PayPal, was an early investor in Facebook, and is the chairman and major shareholder of Palantir Technologies, a big-data and AI company known for its work with U.S. intelligence agencies. His investments span frontier technology, including SpaceX, Anthropic, Etched, and Anduril. While he has dabbled in energy ventures, Vista Energy represents his first significant stake in a traditional oil producer.
A Growing Connection with Argentina
Thiel has cultivated a close relationship with Argentine President Javier Milei, meeting at the Casa Rosada on February 27, 2024, May 8, 2024, and April 23, 2026. During his latest visit, he reportedly purchased a mansion in Barrio Parque, an upscale Buenos Aires neighborhood, and enrolled his children in a local school. The New York Times reported that Thiel temporarily moved his family to Argentina.
In May 2026, he even participated in a chess tournament at the Torre Blanca Chess Circle in Almagro, finishing third. The bond is mutual: as Argentine ambassador to the U.S., Alec Oxenford quoted Thiel as saying, “I visited Javier Milei at the Casa Rosada with Peter Thiel, who told me he believes Milei's ideas are as globally relevant as they are for Argentina.”
Thiel is also slated to be a keynote speaker at the “Vientos de Cambio” forum, organized by the Fundación Libertad y Progreso, scheduled for September 1-2 at the Sheraton Hotel in Retiro, Buenos Aires.
Why Oil and Why Now?
Thiel's fund holds positions in Amazon, Vistra Corp., American Electric Power, DTE Energy, FirstEnergy, CMS Energy, and X-Energy—all electric or nuclear power companies. This reflects a strategic bet on energy to power AI data centers. Through his venture capital firm Founders Fund, Thiel invests in nuclear and energy tech startups like General Matter, Radiant Industries, and Crusoe Energy, which in 2023 partnered with Argentine firm Unblock Computing to deploy gas-capture technology in Vaca Muerta (though that business was later sold).
The timing is also favorable: Argentina is reopening international capital markets for its oil companies, and the development of the VMOS pipeline and port is set to significantly boost crude export capacity. By investing in Vista, Thiel is tapping into a country that is rapidly becoming a global energy player, backed by Milei's pro-market reforms.
With a total portfolio of US$ 418.7 million, Thiel's bet on Vista is substantial—and a clear signal that Vaca Muerta is on the radar of the world's most influential investors.
