The Dragon War Officially Begins

June 19, 2025

This Sunday, June 22 (Monday, June 23 in Spain and Europe), HBO Max premieres the third season of House of the Dragon. Unlike previous installments, which focused on political maneuvering and family conflicts, this new chapter jumps straight into full-scale war. Showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that the pacing will be significantly more aggressive, and the long wait between seasons will be rewarded with unprecedented visual spectacle.

Context: What is the 'Dance of the Dragons'?

For new viewers unfamiliar with George R.R. Martin's universe, the series adapts the book Fire & Blood, set approximately 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The story chronicles a devastating civil war that nearly exterminated House Targaryen. The conflict pits two factions against each other: The Greens (loyal to King Aegon II and Queen Alicent Hightower) and The Blacks (loyal to Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen). What begins as a dispute over succession escalates into a massacre where dragons—the world's most powerful weapons—turn against their own masters.

A Declaration of Intent: Terror and Brutality

Actor Ewan Mitchell, who plays the feared Aemond Targaryen, described the season with a striking quote: "It's a horror series, but the monsters are the human beings in it." This statement perfectly captures the tone of the new installment, where violence shifts from political intrigue to explicit warfare. The first major event will be The Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval confrontation promising to change the course of the war.

Emma D'Arcy's Rhaenyra will no longer be reactive. The actor revealed their character will experience a radicalization similar to "religious fanaticism," making proactive decisions without apology. Meanwhile, the Greens advance with the army from Oldtown and new characters like Ormund Hightower (played by James Norton).

Ryan Condal Responds to Criticism

Following a second season with mixed reactions due to its measured pacing, Condal defended the series' vision in an interview. He clarified that he is "not writing a contemporary allegory" and that, while the series interacts with modern politics (such as women in power), it doesn't seek to be a political essay.

Regarding complaints about the slower pace, he noted: "It's been a long time and there's a long wait between seasons... I think everyone's patience will be rewarded within a couple of weeks." He confirmed the series is planned to conclude around 2028, and that this 8-episode season represents the conflict's climax.

Key fact: The production received a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its premiere, surpassing previous criticisms.
