In 1993, when Jurassic Park hit theaters, Ariana Richards' life changed forever. She was only 13 years old, and her role as Lex Murphy – the brave, smart granddaughter of the park's creator – made her a child star recognized worldwide.

Richards was born on September 11, 1979, in Healdsburg, California, into an art-involved family: her mother worked as a producer and public relations representative. She studied at Skidmore College, graduating in Fine Arts and Drama, and later attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and Western Oregon University.

An Early and Successful Career

Before Jurassic Park, Richards already had an acting path: at age 7, she debuted in a commercial and appeared in TV series like The Golden Girls, My Sister Sam, and Empty Nest. The Turn Toward Art

As a child, Richards often painted watercolors during downtime on set. One painting – where she drew herself next to her co-star Joseph Mazzello and a Brachiosaurus – she gave to Steven Spielberg, who had it framed and hung it in his home.

After roles in Angus (1995), The Princess Stallion (1997), and Tremors 3: Back to Perfection (2001), she decided to step away from acting to focus entirely on painting, specializing in oil portraits. The exception was Battledogs (2013), a project that briefly brought her back in front of the camera.

In interviews, Richards has explained that it wasn't an abrupt decision: “Acting will always be something I carry in my blood. What really attracts me is visual art.” About her work, she added: “I love capturing people's stories on canvas, their impression and what they want to express.”
