The international community is closely watching negotiations between the United States and Iran following announcements of a potential peace agreement that could materialize in the coming hours. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that the pact is closer than ever, with an electronic signature expected within 24 hours, followed by technical talks next week.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed via his social media platform Truth that the agreement was "scheduled to be signed tomorrow" and that the Strait of Hormuz would reopen immediately. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Bagaei clarified that there would be no signing on Sunday, though he left open the possibility for the coming days.

Pakistan acts as a key mediator in the negotiations. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry reported that Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani of Qatar is also participating in the diplomatic efforts. Sharif expressed gratitude for Qatar's support during the Gulf crisis and his hope that the agreement will lay the foundation for "lasting peace and stability" in the region.
One of the most sensitive points is the status of Lebanon. Iran insists on including a ceasefire in that country, but Israel has warned it will not withdraw from areas it occupies in Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, or the northern West Bank. Fighting continued on Saturday in southern Lebanon. According to previous data, more than 3,700 people have died in Lebanon since March 2026.
The war between the United States and Iran began on February 28, 2026, shaking the region and practically paralyzing oil and natural gas shipments from the Persian Gulf. A fragile ceasefire has been in place since April 7, which now seeks to be consolidated into a definitive agreement.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi clarified that the document under discussion "is not a final agreement" but rather "an understanding that outlines the general framework" and establishes that the war will end. The nuclear issue would be left for discussion during a 60-day period following the initial signing.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, one of the most critical chokepoints for global oil transportation. Approximately 20% of the world's petroleum passes through this strait. Its closure, which occurred during the conflict, caused a global energy crisis with fuel prices rising dramatically and impacts on food and fertilizer costs worldwide.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted global energy supply, driving up fuel prices and increasing costs of food and fertilizers. Brent crude oil stood at USD 87.33 per barrel, while WTI fell to USD 85.47. The reopening of the strait could stabilize global energy markets.
