United States Vice President JD Vance issued a stark warning to Iran, declaring that "violence will be met with violence", following US military strikes on Iranian facilities. This action was a direct response to an attack on a merchant ship in the critically important Strait of Hormuz.
Vance stated on social media: "Iran signed a ceasefire agreement. We have honored it. If they have disagreements about how the memorandum of understanding is being applied, they can call us."

Former President Donald Trump characterized the Iranian attack as a violation of the ceasefire agreed upon the previous week.
"I don't like that they launched an attack yesterday, actually, four of them," Trump stated from the White House.
When asked about the contradiction between these incidents and ongoing negotiations with Tehran, he responded: "They are a bit different."
Amidst the military escalation, Israel, Lebanon, and the United States signed a trilateral framework agreement in Washington, establishing the foundations for a lasting peace after decades of hostilities.

The armed conflict began on March 2, 2026, when Hezbollah opened fire in retaliation for the death of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in attacks attributed to the United States and Israel.
The Israeli response included airstrikes and a ground invasion that, according to Lebanese authorities, has caused more than 4,200 deaths and displaced over one million people.
The memorandum of understanding stipulates that Iran must guarantee safe and free passage for merchant vessels for 60 days from the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman, and vice versa.
