A tragedy shook visitors and residents of Rio de Janeiro when a man lost his life after falling from a height of 150 meters (nearly 500 feet) at the famous Pedra do Macaco cliff, located in the western zone of the Brazilian city.
According to local sources, the tourist was attempting to take a photograph at the top of the viewpoint when he decided to back down while facing away from the edge to get a better perspective for his shot. It was at that moment when he lost his balance and plummeted into the void, suffering a fatal fall.
Pedra do Macaco (Monkey Stone in English) is a rock formation located in the São Conrado neighborhood, one of Rio de Janeiro's most prestigious areas. It is famous for offering spectacular panoramic views of the Brazilian coastline and is a popular destination among tourists and hiking enthusiasts.
For international visitors unfamiliar with Rio, this city is Brazil's second-largest metropolis, known worldwide for Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana Beach, and its dramatic mountainous landscape where granite peaks meet the ocean. According to international studies, more than 250 people have died between 2011 and 2024 while attempting to take photographs in dangerous locations, with falls from heights being the leading cause of death. Water-related incidents and traffic accidents follow closely behind.
Brazilian authorities have reiterated their call for tourists to prioritize their safety above any photograph. "No image is worth a life," stated the Rio de Janeiro Tourism Secretariat, reminding visitors that viewpoints offer safe angles to capture the landscape's beauty without risking physical integrity.
