Pope Leo XIV Decrees Excommunication Over Lefebvrian Bishop Ordinations

02/07/2026 15:25 - Internacionales

Fraternity of St. Pius X Ordains Four New Bishops

On July 1, 2026, the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX) carried out the ordination of four bishops without the Pope's authorization, in a ceremony held in Écône, Switzerland. The new bishops are Pascal Schreiber (Swiss), Michael Goldade (American), Michel Poinsinet de Sivry, and Marc Hanappier (both French).

Vatican Rejection and Schism Warning

Pope Leo XIV had previously requested that the fraternity desist from the act, explicitly labeling it as schismatic. Despite warnings from Rome, the Superior General of the FSSPX, Davide Pagliarini, defended the ordinations by arguing the need to secure the future of the fraternity and its pastoral mission.

Historical Context of the FSSPX

The Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X was founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. The organization is known for rejecting several reforms promoted by the Second Vatican Council and currently has approximately 720 priests and 500,000 faithful worldwide.
