A Rescue That Gave Hope to Venezuela
On June 24, 2026, a double earthquake shook Venezuela, leaving more than 6,100 dead. Amidst the tragedy, a story of hope emerged from the rubble in La Guaira, a coastal state near the capital Caracas, which was the zone most affected by the quake.
Two days later, on June 26, rescue teams managed to make contact with Cristina Margarita Ramos, a 71-year-old woman who was trapped under the building where she lived. For over 20 hours, firefighters worked tirelessly to pull her out alive.
The Words That Moved a Country
What made her story go viral was her attitude. While rescuers tried to get her out from the ruins, Cristina joked about her dust-covered appearance:
"What a shame, you have to see me with this dirty face."
A firefighter replied: "You are beautiful, and I love those nails." That compliment to her well-kept nails, visible through the hole in the rubble, earned her the nickname "the lady with the pretty nails" and made her a symbol of hope for all of Venezuela.
The Mystery Behind Her Disappearance
After being rescued alive, Cristina was taken by ambulance to the Naval Hospital of Catia la Mar. But from that moment on, all official traces of her were lost.
Her children, residing in the United States, traveled to Venezuela to begin a desperate search. They visited hospitals, shelters, judicial records, and improvised morgues along the coast, with no answers.
On July 31, a relative recognized her photograph in the archive of one of the emergency morgues in Los Silos, La Guaira. However, the body was not there.
The Discovery of Her Body
Finally, on August 6, 2026, her daughter Cisnet Mata confirmed via social media that authorities had located her mother's body, 42 days after the earthquake.
"My mother's body has been located; now we wait for the legal procedures to follow."
Cisnet thanked Attorney General Larry Devoe and the director of the CICPC (Cuerpo de Investigaciones Cientificas, Penales y Criminalisticas, Venezuela's federal police force similar to the FBI), Douglas Rico, for answering her calls. She clarified that they have not yet retrieved the body and that legal procedures must be completed before burial.
Questions That Remain Unanswered
The case generates indignation and bewilderment in the Venezuelan public opinion. So far, authorities have not specified the causes of death or the reasons why a patient rescued alive ended up in a morgue without her relatives being notified.
The family demands to know when and why Cristina Margarita Ramos died, the woman who for several hours symbolized the hope of an entire people and whose good humor amidst the rubble moved the world.
An investigation has been opened into the chain of custody and the medical care provided after the incident, amid a healthcare system overwhelmed by the magnitude of the tragedy. We remain hopeful that the truth will emerge to bring peace to her family.
