India's Gen Z Fights for a Fair Future in Job Exams
A climate of hope and change is breathing through the streets of Jharkhand, an eastern state in India, where thousands of young people have raised their voices to demand transparency and equal opportunities in accessing public employment.
A March for Transparency
On August 10, 2026, thousands of young job aspirants marched to the state legislative assembly in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand. The protesters demanded an independent investigation by India's CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) to clarify alleged irregularities, such as exam paper leaks and cheating, which have deprived many of a fair chance.
Police attempted to disperse the crowd using water cannons and tear gas. However, in an act of defiance and resilience, some young people responded by dancing and cheering as the water soaked the crowd, demonstrating a peaceful yet firm spirit.
The Context: The Cockroach Movement
This protest comes just weeks after the emergence of the Cockroach Movement, a youth-led campaign that started as an online joke and transformed into a national outcry against leaks in the national medical entrance exam. This movement placed immense pressure on the national government led by the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party), resulting in the resignation of the Education Minister in late July 2026.
The Harsh Reality of Employment in India
In Jharkhand, unemployment has been a constant challenge, making government jobs highly coveted for the security, pensions, and health benefits they offer. The competition is fierce: in a recent selection process in the state, 640,000 applications were received for just 2,025 positions. In another, over 322,000 candidates competed for 510 vacancies.
According to official data, the unemployment rate fell to 9.9% last year. However, a 2026 study by Azim Premji University revealed that nearly 40% of graduates aged 15 to 25 remain unemployed. With almost two-thirds of India's population under the age of 35, the demand for quality jobs is an urgent priority.
Political Reactions and Progress
The state government, led by a regional party allied with the opposition Congress party, has sought to open dialogue tables to resolve the crisis peacefully. Officials stated that most of the demands have already been accepted and they are open to further negotiations. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi condemned the use of police force and emphasized that only dialogue can generate solutions.
Significant progress has already been made: the former chairman of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission was arrested for alleged exam irregularities, and three members of the commission have resigned, paving the way for institutional reform.
