What are 'Cownose' Stingrays?
The protagonists of this video are cownose rays, a migratory species of elasmobranchs (cartilaginous fish). Their name comes from their distinctive head with high lobes that resembles a cow's snout. They are shy and non-aggressive creatures, with a wingspan that can reach up to 3 feet (1 meter). They feed primarily on bivalve mollusks, such as clams, and other inhabitants of the seabed.
A curious fact is that when these stingrays gather in large numbers, the collective is known by the poetic term 'fever', as in 'a fever of rays'.
