A Message of Hope and Aid for Colombia
Following the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook Colombia on August 10, 2026, at 07:34 AM, the entire world has rallied in solidarity with the Colombian people. Amidst the devastation, Pope Francis has expressed his spiritual closeness and sent financial aid to assist the families affected by this tragedy, demonstrating that fraternity can illuminate the darkest moments.
The Aftermath of the Tragedy
According to reports from the Association of Capital Cities of Colombia (Asocapitales) released on August 13, 2026, the official figures reflect the magnitude of the quake:
- 241 deceased
- 3,771 injured
- 279 missing
- 257 collapsed structures
The most affected cities remain on red alert: Cali (74 fatalities), Pereira (83 fatalities), Quibdó, Manizales, and Armenia. The epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, in the Pacific coastal department of Chocó.
Solidarity and Heroism in Action
Hope shines through heroic acts. Brian Osorio Zuluaga rescued a baby from the rubble in Cali, and Dr. Germán Somoyar saved two newborns in Apartadó. Likewise, artists like Karol G, Maluma, J Balvin, and the Montaner family have activated their foundations and collection centers to send tons of humanitarian aid.
Additionally, the United States government announced $15.5 million in aid to support national recovery efforts.
What does plate subduction mean?
The earthquake was caused by the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate. For those unfamiliar with geology, this process occurs when one tectonic plate slides beneath another, releasing immense amounts of energy that trigger high-magnitude earthquakes.
