The disaster occurred around 8:40 a.m. local time, when an ice block approximately 610 meters wide detached from an altitude of 5,181 meters and fell about 1,219 meters into the valley below. Scientists explain that the debris flow blocked the Lhende/Bhote Koshi River, forming a natural dam.
