A Father's Forgiveness and the Dickason Case: The Tragedy of Mental Health

28/07/2026 09:46 - Judiciales

The Night That Changed Everything in Timaru

On September 16, 2021, the peace of a family home in Timaru, New Zealand, was shattered by a tragedy that would spark a global conversation about mental health.

According to reports compiled by Infobae, Graham Dickason returned home just before 10:00 PM to find his wife Lauren in the kitchen with an unfamiliar expression. When he asked what was wrong, she uttered only three words: It's too late.

In the bedrooms lay their three daughters: Liane, aged 6, and twins Karla and Maya, aged 2. Lauren, a physician with no criminal record, had suffocated the girls just weeks after the family emigrated from South Africa.

A Family Built with Love and Perseverance

Lauren and Graham met in 2005 in Pretoria, South Africa. She was a doctor; he, an orthopedic surgeon. Motherhood did not come easily: the couple endured 17 failed rounds of in vitro fertilization. In 2013, Lauren became pregnant, but the baby, Sarah, was born prematurely at 18 weeks and died.

This devastating loss marked a turning point, leading to a diagnosis of major depression with anxiety. Years later, they turned to donated eggs. In 2014, Liane was born, and in 2019, the twins. Friends described Lauren as a devoted mother and one of the kindest people they knew.

The Move and the Breakdown

In August 2021, the family relocated to New Zealand after Graham secured a job. Following quarantine, a minor incident—a child photographing her daughters—deeply unsettled Lauren, who began questioning the move. On September 16, Graham left for a work dinner. When he returned, he found the horror. Lauren attempted suicide after committing the crimes.

The Trial and Sentence

The trial began in July 2023. The defense argued insanity and infanticide due to a severe psychotic episode. However, the jury found her guilty by majority. On June 26, 2024, Judge Cameron Mander sentenced her to 18 years in prison, rejecting life imprisonment due to her mental illness, and ordered her to a specialized care unit.

Forgiveness and a Message of Hope

Days after the tragedy, Graham surprised the world by revealing he had forgiven Lauren, describing her as another victim of mental illness. Her parents, Wendy and Malcolm Fawkes, made an urgent call for society to learn to recognize the symptoms of postpartum depression.

In July 2024, Lauren filed an appeal against her conviction, with a hearing scheduled for February 2025 in Wellington. This case leaves a fundamental lesson: the importance of caring for mental health and seeking help in time. Awareness, empathy, and love can be the greatest tools to prevent tragedies and heal wounds.
