A Happy Ending: Micaela Is Alive
The 40-day nightmare that gripped the city of Rosario ended with a wave of relief. Micaela Albornoz, 32, was located alive and well in Brazil.
The young woman, last seen on June 24, 2026 leaving her home in the Tablada neighborhood of Rosario, was found on August 3, 2026 at the Argentine Consulate in Florianópolis. Her discovery is a testament to her family’s perseverance and the coordinated work of security forces across two countries.
The Unexpected Twist: A Stolen ID and a Plea for Help
The mystery began to unravel when Micaela voluntarily walked into the diplomatic mission to request financial assistance to travel to São Paulo. To process the request, she presented an ID card that did not belong to her—it was from a neighbor in her Rosario neighborhood.
That document was already being tracked by the Ministry of Justice and Security of Santa Fe. When consular staff entered the data into the system, an alert was triggered: the ID’s owner had a missing person report in Argentina. To confirm her identity, consular officials performed a fingerprint comparison.
The Family’s Relief
The news reached her family around 4:00 PM local time. Claudia, Micaela’s mother, could not hide her emotion: 'I’m happy, I dreamed of this, I’m overjoyed that they found my daughter. I’m anxious, but from the happiness of knowing she is alive, that she is well, and I want to tell her I love her and I can’t wait to hug her.'
Her brother Alejo received a call from the Argentine consul, who showed him a picture of Micaela sitting and eating. 'She was calm, she looked good. Now we are insisting with the government for her repatriation,' he said.
The Arduous Investigation Trail
During those 40 days, the search spanned multiple Argentine provinces and involved a massive deployment. Those close to Micaela had warned that she was dealing with mental health issues, adding complexity to the case. The journey included:
- Córdoba: Bank account movements were detected, and she was briefly detained by local police.
- Santa Fe: Security cameras captured her on Route 34 in Cañada Rosquín in late July.
- Santiago del Estero and Misiones: On July 28, she bought bus tickets using the neighbor’s ID to Santiago del Estero, though the last clue placed her in Misiones.
The Santa Fe government had offered a reward of 10 million Argentine pesos (roughly $7,500 USD at the time), and the national Ministry of Security added another 5 million pesos for information leading to her whereabouts. The search reached international level through an Interpol yellow notice issued by the Córdoba prosecutor’s office.
What Happens Next?
Federico Angelini, Secretary of Institutional Management of the Santa Fe Ministry of Justice and Security, confirmed that Micaela is in good health. Her return to Argentina now depends on judicial procedures and diplomatic efforts between the Argentine Foreign Ministry and its Brazilian counterpart.
Governor Maximiliano Pullaro had ordered all state resources to be used to find her safe and sound—a goal that was achieved today. The family eagerly awaits the reunion.
