The Son's Account
Juan Sebastián Verón, son of Romina María de los Ángeles Calvo (40), spoke this Friday on the Argentine TV program DDM and recounted how he learned about the crime that shook the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Villa Devoto. The young man, who has already testified before the justice system, explained that it was his brother who called him around 7 a.m. on Thursday: "That's when I heard my 8-year-old sister say what had happened."
The girl witnessed the attack by her father, Walter Humberto Verón (57), against her mother in the room they shared. According to investigators who reviewed security cameras, the man left for work but returned a few minutes later with a knife, argued with Calvo in the hallway, and attacked her in front of the child. The girl ran to seek help and woke up her older brother.
"She Could Only Speak When I Arrived at the Scene"
Juan Sebastián said he found his sister crying and in shock: "We spent a good while talking to her because she was in shock. She's calmer now at my uncle's house, she's with other girls, she managed to sleep, but she's still in shock." He stated that his main concern is protecting his siblings and ensuring they receive psychological support: "So they can grieve and move forward."
The State of the Killer and the Letter
The young man also referred to his father's health, who attempted suicide after the attack and remains hospitalized at the Vélez Sarsfield Hospital, intubated in intensive care. "Doctors don't think he'll last many days," he said. Regarding the letter Verón left before the crime, he said it was misinterpreted: "It's not about her financial independence; it's that the two of them were trying to support the three of us." He confessed: "Reading the letter made me sad; what I interpreted is a man who reached his limit."
The letter, found in the femicide's possession, mentions Pitty La Numeróloga (Verónica Asad), a businesswoman who owns candle and essence shops where Romina worked. In the text, Verón accuses her of having changed his partner's personality. A small altar with candles and photos dedicated to Asad was also found in the house. Asad had previously been acquitted in a fraud case but is now under investigation for her possible connection to this case.
Pitty La Numeróloga's Message
Hours after the crime, Asad posted a heartfelt message on Instagram directed at Romina: "I wish your soul finds the peace that was taken from you." She described Romina as "a woman who worked with me" and emphasized that "her life was snatched away by someone who claimed to love her." She also urged women suffering violence to seek help and remarked that "a woman being murdered in front of her daughter" is the most tragic thing.
Background and Debts
The justice system confirmed that Verón already had a conviction in 2018 for minor injuries against Calvo, following an aggression in 2017 in La Tablada. Additionally, the victim had a debt of $44 million (Argentine pesos) according to Infobae, a detail that has been incorporated into the case. Judge Darío Bonanno, in charge of Court No. 62, is awaiting the autopsy results, which revealed at least 40 stab wounds on Romina's body.
The 8-year-old daughter will undergo a Cámara Gesell (a special interview room used for child testimony) to testify, while the family tries to cope with the tragedy. The femicide in Villa Devoto reignites the debate on gender-based violence and the importance of support networks in Argentina, where a woman is killed every 23 hours on average.
