Head-On Collision on Route 60 Claims One Life

A tragic head-on collision occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026 at approximately 8:40 PM on Provincial Route 60, about one kilometer west of the Palmira Bypass in the Maipú department, Mendoza Province, Argentina. The crash involved a Peugeot 504 and a Volkswagen CrossFox, resulting in one fatality and five injuries.

According to police sources, the Peugeot entered the road from a public alley and collided head-on with the CrossFox traveling on the main road.

Driver of Peugeot Dies

The driver of the Peugeot 504, identified as F.O.A., a 48-year-old man, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to Central Hospital. However, he was confirmed dead either during transport or upon arrival.

CrossFox Occupants

The Volkswagen CrossFox carried five people. The driver, identified as M.O.T., was taken to Del Carmen Hospital. The other four passengers were transported to Perrupato and Central hospitals with various degrees of multiple trauma.

Among the injured, a 19-year-old woman was in critical condition and required an air evacuation via Helicopter Halcón 3 from Perrupato Hospital to Central Hospital for specialized care.

Emergency Response

The impact was so severe that a large-scale operation was deployed, involving Highway Police, Police Station 61°, Municipal Traffic, Volunteer Firefighters, and personnel from the Coordinated Emergency Service (SEC). Six ambulances were dispatched to assist the victims.

Firefighters had to control a fuel spill on the road while temporary traffic closures were implemented at the accesses to Route 60 and the Palmira Bypass.

A child was also urgently transported to Notti Hospital with significant injuries, though her current condition has not been reported.

Investigation Underway

The case is under the jurisdiction of the Fiscal Office and has been classified as criminal negligence (homicidio culposo). Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances, though the main hypothesis is that the Peugeot entered the road without noticing the CrossFox.

This tragic accident highlights the ongoing concern about road safety on provincial routes in Mendoza, especially in rural areas where intersections with alleys are often critical points.
