Milei Accelerates Reforms Toward 2027: Congress Takes Center Stage

A Crucial Week for the Administration's Agenda

The government of Javier Milei has launched an intense agenda of meetings and structural reforms for the second half of the year, making the Argentine Congress the central stage for the administration's next steps. With an eye on the 2027 presidential elections, the ruling party is accelerating timelines to consolidate its economic and political project.

Central Bank (BCRA) Reform

According to various media reports, President Javier Milei would have summoned legislators from La Libertad Avanza to the Casa Rosada (the seat of the executive branch) for Monday, July 13, 2026, at 15:00. The main objective would be to advance the reform of the BCRA's Organic Charter, a project spearheaded by Santiago Bausili, Luis Caputo, and Federico Sturzenegger.

The initiative aims to replace the current 5 objectives of the Central Bank with a single mandate: preserving the value of the currency. Additionally, it proposes prohibiting money issuance to finance fiscal deficits, eliminating the distribution of accounting profits and intransferable letters, and including criminal sanctions for those who violate the institution's autonomy.

Electoral Strategy Towards 2027

The ruling party is pushing to eliminate the PASO (Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory Primaries), but currently lacks the necessary votes in the Senate: 37 senators are required, and La Libertad Avanza currently holds 21. To unblock the situation, Diego Santilli is reportedly negotiating with Radical and PRO party governors.

Internal polling rumors would place Milei at 32 points of voter intention and Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof at 27 points, presenting a highly competitive and dynamic scenario for the upcoming elections.

Encouraging Economic Indicators

The government highlights a series of economic data showing a stabilization of the Argentine economy. The country risk premium stands at 402 basis points, its lowest level in years. Inflation in the City of Buenos Aires for June would have been 1.8%, with a national projection close to 2%.

According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) projections, an estimated growth of 3.5% is expected for Argentina. Furthermore, the government's financial plan projects covering 24.9 billion dollars by 2027, strengthening long-term planning. Source: Google News / La Nación
