Attorney General Casal Seeks Urgent Decree from Milei for Supreme Court Action

14/07/2026 22:04 - Politica

A Step Towards Judicial Clarity

According to local media reports from July 14, 2026, Argentina's Attorney General (Procurador General de la Nación), Eduardo Casal, would have formally requested President Javier Milei to issue a Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU).

The goal of this measure is to amend the consequences of the recent Leinas ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (CSJN). This ruling apparently restricted the capacity of prosecutors to intervene and investigate before the highest judicial body in Argentina.

Context: What is a DNU?

A DNU (Decree of Necessity and Urgency) is an executive tool in Argentina that allows the President to pass laws without the immediate vote of the National Congress. It is reserved for exceptional situations, helping the government act swiftly to solve pressing institutional or administrative challenges without waiting for the legislative process.

The Leinas Ruling Explained

The Leinas ruling would have established new boundaries for the Public Prosecutor's Office (Ministerio Público Fiscal) when acting before the Supreme Court. The Attorney General's office reportedly expressed these difficulties to Congress, motivating Casal to seek an executive solution to ensure prosecutors can continue their vital work effectively.
