Kicillof's Political Machine: MDF Consolidates Power in Buenos Aires Ahead of 2027
The governor of Argentina's most populous province is building a powerful territorial network to secure his path to the presidency.
A Strategic Push in the Fourth Electoral Section
On Saturday, August 8, and Sunday, August 9, 2026, the province of Buenos Aires was the stage for intense political activity by the Movimiento Derecho al Futuro (MDF), the political space led by Governor Axel Kicillof. Under the coordination of Government Minister Carlos Bianco, the provincial ruling party deployed its territorial strategy in the Fourth Electoral Section, holding meetings in the towns of Alberti and Bragado.
According to La Razón de Chivilcoy, the plenary in Alberti took place at the La Candela club and brought together five Buenos Aires provincial ministers, mayors, and hundreds of activists. The Chivilcoy delegation was particularly large, featuring figures such as Luciano Dellepiane, councilmen Fernando Poggio and Gabriel Deiure, former deputy Nora Salbitano, and leaders from organizations like Apertura Peronista and La Corriente de la Militancia. The meeting also included the mayors of La Matanza and Ensenada, Fernando Espinoza and Mario Secco.
Meanwhile, Infonoroeste reported that Bianco also participated in an event in Bragado alongside local mayor Sergio Barenghi and provincial senator Germán Lago. There, the official expressed on his social media: 'The construction of a political alternative is underway; we are part of that people who want dignity and rights to become a reality in our homeland in 2027.'
The Road to the Big September Rally
The portal Letra P revealed that these plenaries are just the beginning of a meticulous plan. The meetings will be held every Saturday in different electoral sections of the interior, except for August 22, which is reserved for the launch of the MDF Youth wing in San Martín. All this territorial groundwork will culminate in a massive rally on September 19, 2026 in the city of La Plata, where organizers expect to gather between 30,000 and 40,000 activists from across the country.
Five Contenders for the Provincial Succession
While Kicillof strengthens his projection toward the Casa Rosada (Argentina's presidential palace), the race to succeed him as governor is already taking shape. The governor has put forward five names from his inner circle to compete next year: Gabriel Katopodis, Jorge Ferraresi, Julio Alak, Carlos Bianco, and Andrés Larroque.
The directive from the MDF leadership is clear: everyone must campaign across the province without cross-criticism or low blows. The definition of the candidate is expected to be settled through PASO (open, simultaneous, and mandatory primaries), a scenario that the Kicillof camp considers healthy for internal democracy and for building a unified and strong popular front ahead of the challenges of 2027.
A Federal Vision
Kicillof's strategy is not limited to Buenos Aires. With Andrés Larroque as coordinator, about a dozen leaders close to the governor are touring the country's various provinces, aiming to forge alliances and strengthen his national profile. The premise is to advance political construction without rushing unity negotiations, with the conviction that the best time to sit down and talk will be once the space has consolidated its territorial volume and its proposals for Argentina's future.
