Argentina's Ministry of Defense reported on Thursday, August 13 that Minister Carlos Presti participated in the Americas Security Forum held in Panama, an initiative that brings together 19 countries from the continent to strengthen regional cooperation against transnational threats.
According to the ministry's social media statement, the meeting allowed participants to "advance toward a common understanding of the main threats affecting the region, establish shared priorities, and improve coordination mechanisms, information exchange, and cooperation among participating countries."
Argentina's position
Argentina, which has been part of this process since March, brought its own position to the forum, focused on:
- Strengthening surveillance and control of strategic areas and the protection of critical infrastructure.
- Improving interoperability with other countries.
- Developing cyber defense capabilities and information sharing against external threats.
Presti's presence reaffirmed Argentina's commitment to regional cooperation that complements and strengthens each state's sovereign capabilities, and allowed for deeper ties with regional defense authorities and military leaders.
A key moment for hemispheric defense
The forum comes at a time when Argentina is regaining participation and initiative in hemispheric security and defense discussions, after years of low presence in these multilateral arenas.
The initiative, which promotes cooperation among countries of the continent, aims to address common challenges such as transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, cybersecurity, and the protection of critical infrastructure.
The meeting in Panama is part of a broader process that will continue in the coming months, with new meetings and progress in regional coordination mechanisms.
