A Strategic Leap for the South Atlantic
Argentina is reinforcing its presence in the "End of the World." According to official reports based on Decree (DNU) 867/2026, the National Government has redirected significant funds to upgrade the Armed Forces and safeguard the Argentine Continental Shelf—the submerged extension of the continent's landmass under the sea.
The Integrated Naval Base (BNI) in Ushuaia
The centerpiece of this strategy is the development of the Integrated Naval Base (BNI) in Ushuaia. For those unfamiliar, Ushuaia is the southernmost city in the world, serving as the primary gateway to Antarctica.
This project, initiated in 2022, aims to turn the city into a critical logistical and telecommunications hub. The estimated investment for this monumental work could range between US$ 300 million and US$ 500 million.
Infrastructure Highlights:
- 🚢 Docking: Projected 1,050 linear meters of berth over an area of 15,640 m².
- 📦 Logistics: 10,100 m² dedicated to workshops, cold storage, and fuel depots.
- 🏢 Command: Facilities for the Southern Naval Area Command spanning 39,000 m².
To ensure seamless operations, the government is also considering expanding the Ushuaia Airport runway to enhance connectivity for larger aircraft.

Eyes in the Sky: Program SARE II
Argentina is investing in space via CONAE (the National Commission for Space Activities). The SARE II program involves deploying a "swarm" of four small observation satellites.
These will include SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology. Unlike traditional cameras, SAR can "see" through clouds and darkness, providing 24/7 monitoring of the national territory regardless of weather conditions.
Sovereignty & The RIGI Framework
Parallel to military growth, the government introduced Decree (DNU) 868/2026, targeting unauthorized hydrocarbon (oil/gas) activities in disputed waters, particularly around the Malvinas Islands.
The government has linked this to the RIGI (Large Investment Incentive Regime). Companies operating illegally in disputed areas will be barred from receiving the tax and financial benefits of this incentive program. To qualify, companies must now swear under oath that they do not engage in unauthorized activities in these sensitive zones.
