A Historic Discovery in Bahía Blanca
According to multiple local media outlets, researchers from the Bahía Blanca Biochemical Research Institute (INIBIBB) have achieved an internationally relevant scientific breakthrough. Bahía Blanca is a major city located in the Buenos Aires Province of Argentina, widely known for its strong scientific and academic environment.
The team led by Dr. Juan Facundo Chrestia and Dr. Cecilia Bouzat identified for the first time the exact molecular site where cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with a key receptor of the nervous system, known as the alpha-7 nicotinic receptor.
The discovery was published on June 15, 2026 in the prestigious journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), edited by the United States National Academy of Sciences. The study featured international collaboration from the universities of Oxford and Oxford Brookes in the United Kingdom.
What is the Alpha-7 Receptor and Why Does it Matter?
The alpha-7 nicotinic receptor is a protein present in neurons that plays a fundamental role in memory, learning, and cognition. According to the researchers, in pathologies such as Alzheimer's and other neurological disorders, a decrease in the activity of this receptor is observed.
Unlike THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD does not cause alterations in perception or states of intoxication. Scientists demonstrated that enhancing the activity of this receptor with CBD could favor memory processes and slow down symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases. Specifically, a mutation called M4-L487A turned CBD into a positive allosteric modulator for this receptor.
The Challenge of Argentine Science
Despite this enormous achievement, the path is not without obstacles. CONICET (National Scientific and Technical Research Council), which is Argentina's main government agency for science and technology, had awarded Dr. Chrestia a postdoctoral fellowship. However, this grant ended on July 31, 2026, leaving him outside the institutional system.
Due to this, the researcher, who has dedicated more than 10 years to this line of research, will have to seek other financial support and will only dedicate 10 hours a week to the study instead of full-time. Still, Chrestia maintains his commitment and hope to continue contributing knowledge to the world from Argentina.
