In a recent Federal Health Council (COFESA) meeting, Argentina's Ministry of Health reported record transfers of over $3.4 trillion pesos to provinces for disability support in 2026. Additionally, $234 billion pesos were allocated for oncology and high-cost medications, and a $244 million investment in vaccines was announced. New mandatory notifications for stroke and heart failure were also introduced.

Record Transfers for Disability Support

The Ministry of Health of Argentina announced, via its official X account, the main outcomes of the latest Federal Health Council (COFESA) meeting held on August 10, 2026. COFESA is the coordination body where national and provincial health authorities align policies; Argentina has 23 provinces and the autonomous city of Buenos Aires. During this meeting, the national ministry reported that transfers to provinces for disability support have already exceeded $3.4 trillion pesos in 2026.

This amount represents a milestone in investment for disability policies, reflecting the national government's commitment to inclusion and access to health services for people with disabilities across the country.

Oncology and High-Cost Medications: $234 Billion for 8,298 Patients

Another key point was the work to guarantee oncology and high-cost medications. According to the Ministry, between January and July 2026, more than $234 billion pesos were allocated to treat 8,298 patients requiring these complex treatments.

This investment aims to ensure continuity of critical therapies and equitable access to medications that, due to their cost, are often unaffordable for most people.

Vaccination: $244 Million Investment and Updated Coverage

In prevention, vaccination coverage was updated and a planned investment of over USD 244 million for vaccine purchases during 2026 was detailed. This will sustain and expand the national vaccination schedule, crucial for preventing outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

New Mandatory Notifications: Stroke and Heart Failure

To strengthen health information, it was announced that stroke (CVA) and heart failure will become mandatory notifiable events. This will improve epidemiological monitoring and faster response to these conditions, which are leading causes of death and disability in the country.

Additionally, progress was made with provinces to advance the publication of 2025 vital statistics, aiming for more up-to-date data for decision-making.

El Niño and Dengue: Strengthened Surveillance and Prevention

COFESA also analyzed the potential effects of the El Niño phenomenon on public health. Provinces were called to strengthen surveillance and prevention of associated diseases, and the need to advance in eliminating breeding sites to prevent increased circulation of dengue and other arboviruses was highlighted.

These actions aim to anticipate climate impacts and protect the population, especially in the most vulnerable regions.

A Federal Dialogue Space

COFESA is the natural coordination body between the national government and provinces in health matters. This meeting allowed sharing priorities and joint strategies, reaffirming the commitment to work together to guarantee the right to health for all Argentines.

The Ministry of Health emphasized the importance of continuing to strengthen the public health system with record investments and evidence-based policies.
