The Argentine Ministry of Health confirmed this Wednesday that the vacancy allocation process for health team residencies for the 2026 cycle is moving forward. According to the ministry's social media posts, from August 18 to 20, applicants will select available positions according to the merit order established for each specialty.
The big news this year is the inclusion of PAMI hospitals and Armed Forces hospitals as new training venues, broadening options for professionals starting their specialization stage.
What are medical residencies?
In Argentina, residencies are a postgraduate training system for doctors, nurses, biochemists, pharmacists, and other health professionals. Trainees work and study in public hospitals for a period that usually lasts between 3 and 5 years, rotating through different services under the supervision of specialists. It's the main pathway to become a certified specialist in the public health system.
Vacancy selection is done through a centralized online system where each candidate chooses their destination based on their score on the entrance exam and the resulting merit list. Those with higher scores get priority to pick the most sought-after placements.
New training institutions
This year, the offer expands with the addition of facilities from PAMI (the national social insurance institute for retirees and pensioners) and the Armed Forces. This move aims to diversify practice settings and bring future specialists into environments with unique care characteristics, such as geriatric care or military medicine.
The Ministry highlighted that this expansion is part of a broader policy to strengthen the public health system and improve the geographic distribution of professionals.
The selection schedule runs until August 20, and final results are expected to be published in the coming days on the Ministry's official website.
