A Night of Emotions at the Iconic Obelisco

For those unfamiliar with Argentine culture, the Obelisco is a historic national monument located in the heart of Buenos Aires, at the intersection of the massive 9 de Julio Avenue. It is the traditional gathering spot for sports celebrations. On July 20, 2026, thousands of fans congregated there despite the national team's 1-0 defeat against Spain in the World Cup final held the day before, with a goal by Ferrán Torres at the 106th minute.

The main objective of this massive crowd was to thank the team, coached by Lionel Scaloni, and to bid a heartfelt farewell to Lionel Messi in his last World Cup appearance. Messi was substituted at the 70th minute by Giuliano Simeone, marking the end of an era for global football.

Peaceful Support and a Heartfelt Farewell

The call to gather in downtown Buenos Aires was massive. The vast majority of the crowd, consisting largely of families and passionate supporters, experienced the night with immense respect and affection. They demonstrated that reaching the World Cup final is a monumental achievement and a source of deep national pride, filling the streets with hope for the future of the team.

Late-Night Disturbances

Unfortunately, as reported by local outlets like MinutoUno and El Litoral, past 11:30 PM on Sunday, a minority group began throwing stones and bottles at the City Police officers, tearing down some of the security fences.

Security Operation: The police infantry immediately intervened to control the situation along 9 de Julio Avenue, deploying water cannons to disperse the violent rioters and protect the families who were still in the area.

The preliminary outcome of these incidents resulted in 12 individuals arrested. Authorities have yet to release an official report on potential injuries or the specific charges against those detained.

Staying Safe During Mass Gatherings

Security experts recommend staying away from any conflict zones, respecting police cordons, and using alternative routes if disturbances occur. It is always advisable to follow official government channels for real-time updates on traffic closures and public transportation changes during large public events in Buenos Aires.
