Chaos on Donaciano Santos Street
Panic struck the heart of Balneário Camboriú—a luxurious resort city known for its towering skyscrapers in southern Brazil—when a masonry staircase suddenly gave way, turning an ordinary day into a critical urban emergency.
Context: The incident occurred in a building composed of eight "quitinetes" (small, self-contained studio apartments popular in Brazil for affordable urban living).
The collapse resulted in injuries to two 8-year-old children. Thanks to the heroic and rapid response of neighbors, they were rushed to a UPA (Unidade de Pronto Atendimento, a 24-hour urgent care clinic) and subsequently transferred to the Ruth Cardoso Regional Hospital.

The Rescue Operation
Because the collapsed staircase was the only access point to the apartments, the Fire Department (Corpo de Bombeiros) had to deploy mechanical ladders to rescue residents trapped on the upper levels.
Emergency Details
- Mass Evacuation: More than 30 people were preventively removed from the site.
- Shelter: Victims and their pets were moved to a municipal shelter.
- Interdiction: The Civil Defense (Defesa Civil) closed the building due to imminent risk of total collapse.
Currently, an engineer from the municipal Planning Secretariat is conducting a structural evaluation. A comprehensive technical forensic analysis will be performed to determine the exact causes of the collapse, ensuring that future safety measures are strengthened for the community.
