WhatsApp Revolutionizes Privacy: Reserve Your Username and Say Goodbye to Sharing Your Number

29/06/2026 22:38 - Tecnologia

A Historic Change in How We Communicate

WhatsApp, the messaging app with over 3 billion monthly users, has announced a feature that radically transforms user privacy: the ability to use unique usernames instead of phone numbers to establish contact.

What Does This Change Mean?

Until now, anyone with your phone number could contact you on WhatsApp, regardless of whether you knew them personally. This raised legitimate privacy concerns, especially in contexts like online purchases, professional networking, or situations requiring contact while preserving intimacy.

With the new system, you'll be able to share only your username, keeping your phone number completely private.

Key Features

  • Usernames: Between 3 and 40 characters
  • No public directory: Cannot be searched like on social networks
  • Total control: Can be changed or deactivated anytime
  • Gradual rollout: Feature will arrive country by country over the coming months

How to Reserve Your Username?

The process is simple. WhatsApp has already enabled reservations for users who want to secure their name before the official launch:

Step Action Location
1 Update WhatsApp App Store or Google Play
2 Go to Settings App's side menu
3 Select Account Profile settings section
4 Choose Username New option being gradually enabled
5 Reserve your desired name Between 3 and 40 characters
Important: If the option doesn't appear in your app yet, that's normal. The rollout is gradual, and WhatsApp will notify you within the app when the feature becomes available in your country.

What WON'T Change

No user directory

Unlike Instagram or Telegram, WhatsApp won't allow profile searches. Only those who know your exact username will be able to contact you.

It's not a social network

There won't be contact suggestions or visible public profiles. Privacy remains central to the design.

When Will It Be Available?

The company owned by Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, informed that the rollout will be gradual over the coming months. Each country will receive the feature at different times, and users will receive an in-app notification when the system is active in their region.

This update represents one of the most significant changes in WhatsApp's history, positioning the platform as a leader in personal data protection in the instant messaging market.
