The company Anthropic announced on July 22, 2026, an innovation that promises to transform how we work with artificial intelligence. The new feature, called Record a Skill (also known as Tech Claude a Skill), removes the reliance on traditional text prompts and replaces them with a much more natural method: showing the AI how to do something while explaining it with your voice.
For years, one of the biggest challenges in using AI assistants was the need to write precise and detailed instructions. These descriptions, often complex, required the user to translate their muscle memory into text. With this update, that obstacle largely disappears, bringing automation closer to people without technical knowledge.
The mechanism is simple and intuitive. Within the desktop application of Claude Cowork, users can access the "+" menu and select the "Record a Skill" option. From that moment on:
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Access Claude Cowork on the desktop version |
| 2 | Click the "+" button in the text box |
| 3 | Select "Record a Skill" |
| 4 | Perform the task on screen while narrating each step out loud |
| 5 | End the recording; Claude processes and saves the skill |
| 6 | Ask Claude to execute the task whenever needed |
During the demonstration, the AI tracks and records all mouse movements, keystrokes, and verbal comments. Once the session is finished, the system processes the recording and turns it into a structured skill, automatically saved in the user's personal library.
Developer Pasquale Pillitteri explained that the difference compared to a simple recorded macro is substantial: Claude does not repeat movements pixel by pixel, but understands the intention of the task and reapplies it even when the starting data changes.
This approach replicates the logic of observational learning or vicarious learning, a concept theorized in psychology by Albert Bandura, who explained that humans acquire complex behaviors by observing others. Decades later, Anthropic applies this principle to artificial intelligence.
The tool is designed to automate frequent processes:
The skill recording feature is available exclusively to subscribers of paid plans: Pro, Max, and Team. Additionally, it can only be used from the desktop version of Claude Cowork, where the environment allows managing local files, persistent memory, and connectors.
| Plan | Monthly Price | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | USD $20 | Individual plan |
| Max | USD $100 - $200 | Individual plan with higher capacity |
| Team | USD $20 - $125 per user | Minimum 5 users |
The update was well received by those who consider it an advancement in accessibility. AndroidHeadlines noted that allowing Claude to observe, listen, and learn removes the middleman and could easily save hours of tedious work each week.
Meanwhile, cybersecuritynews highlighted that this update lowers the technical barrier to automate repetitive digital tasks, replacing the need to code or perform detailed prompt engineering.
However, some analysts expressed skepticism. Analyst Daniel Sánchez pointed out on LinkedIn that users are providing high-quality free training data to Anthropic, while paying for the privilege of training the AI. Only time will tell if this is the beginning of a new era of AI-assisted productivity.
