First Exomoon Outside the Solar System Discovered: A Jupiter-Sized World

A Historic Milestone in Astronomy

Humanity has just taken a giant leap in understanding the cosmos. After more than 40 years of tireless search and over 6,000 exoplanets discovered, scientists have finally found what could be the first natural satellite outside our solar system. The exciting announcement, published on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, in the prestigious scientific journal Nature, opens a real Pandora's box for the global astronomical community.

The discovery was made possible thanks to the work of an international team led by researchers from Chile, who used observations from the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), located in the Atacama Desert. The system, named CD-35 2722, has such a unique structure that experts are still debating how to classify it correctly.

What Exactly is an Exomoon and Why Do They Doubt Calling it a Moon?

In our solar system, a moon is a body that orbits a planet. However, the newly discovered object does not orbit a planet, but a brown dwarf, a celestial body in an intriguing middle ground: it is too large to be a planet, but lacks the mass to initiate nuclear fusion and become a star.

  • Location: About 71-73 light-years from Earth, in the Milky Way.
  • Central Star: A red dwarf with about 40-50% of the mass of our Sun.
  • Brown Dwarf: Has about 30-33 times the mass of Jupiter and still glows with residual heat from its formation.
  • The Exomoon: Has at least 90% of the mass of Jupiter. It is a gaseous body that completes an orbit every 170 days.

Key Concepts

Brown Dwarf: A substellar object, intermediate between a giant planet and a star. It does not sustainably generate its own light because it cannot achieve nuclear fusion.

Radial Velocity: An astronomical technique that detects small wobbles in a star caused by the gravity of an orbiting body, altering the light we receive on Earth.

The Method Behind the Great Discovery

To detect this new world, the research team used the advanced CRIRES+ instrument, installed on ESO's VLT. They applied the radial velocity method, the same technique that allowed the discovery of the first exoplanet around a Sun-like star. The method consists of measuring how the exomoon's gravity causes the brown dwarf to move slightly back and forth, altering the light that reaches us.

This is the first time this technique has produced solid evidence of a satellite orbiting a substellar companion. As astrophysicist Alice Zurlo, director of the Millennium Nucleus YEMS in Chile, explained: This system blurs the lines between stars, planets, and moons.

A Gateway to New Horizons

Kevin Hoy, lead author of the study and researcher at Universidad Diego Portales, highlighted that this system likely had a fairly chaotic dynamic history, making it difficult to determine whether the exomoon formed from the brown dwarf's gas and dust disk or was later captured by its gravity.

The future of space exploration looks very promising. With the upcoming operation of ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which is expected to begin functioning in 2028, astronomers will be able to detect smaller exomoons and analyze the composition of these distant worlds in detail. This discovery shows that the universe is even more diverse, surprising, and wonderful than we imagined.
