You arrive at a friend's house or a café and don't want to type that long, complicated WiFi password? There are official and quick solutions! Here's how to do it on each operating system, without risking network security.
On Android devices, a phone already connected to the network can generate a QR code containing the access details. Your guest just needs to scan this code using their phone's camera or the WiFi menu to join the network without typing a single character. QR codes are a type of matrix barcode that can store text, URLs, or in this case, WiFi credentials.
Apple offers a native feature to automatically share the password between nearby devices. Both devices must be close together, with Bluetooth and WiFi turned on. When you bring them near, the owner receives a notification to authorize the connection with a simple tap. This uses Apple's proprietary wireless sharing protocol, similar to AirDrop.
The WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) button is still present on some routers. It involves pressing a physical button on the modem to accept new devices without needing a password. While very useful in the past, today it is considered less secure and compatible, so many manufacturers have stopped prioritizing it in their modern equipment. WPS has known vulnerabilities that can allow attackers to brute-force the PIN, which is why it's often disabled by default on newer routers.
These methods are designed for authorized sharing. Attempting to access other people's networks without the owner's permission is illegal and can expose you to penalties. Always ask for permission and use official tools!
