The entertainment world is in mourning. Actress Daveigh Chase, remembered for her iconic role as the terrifying Samara Morgan in the horror film "The Ring" (2002), reportedly died on Tuesday, June 17, 2026, at the age of 35. The news was confirmed by her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, to the celebrity news outlet TMZ.
According to reports, the cause of death was meningitis (an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord) and a blood infection that developed into sepsis (a life-threatening response to infection that can lead to organ failure). TMZ reported that Chase had been hospitalized earlier in June 2026 at a Los Angeles medical facility due to malnutrition, and the fatal infection developed during that hospitalization.
Chase began her Hollywood journey at a very young age. In 2002, she landed two of the most memorable roles of her career:
That same year, her haunting portrayal of Samara Morgan in "The Ring" (the American remake of the Japanese horror film "Ringu") made her instantly recognizable in horror cinema. Her performance earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Villain in 2003.
Beginning in 2006, Chase added a long-running television credit to her resume: the role of Rhonda Volmer in the HBO series "Big Love", a drama about a polygamous Mormon family in Utah. She appeared in 32 episodes across five seasons.
Her filmography also includes roles in "Donnie Darko" (2001), the cult psychological thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, "Beethoven's 5th" (2003), and guest appearances in television series such as "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" and "ER" (the popular medical drama).
In the context of the ongoing legal proceedings against music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs", a video from 2003 recently recirculated on social media. The footage shows Combs, then 33 years old, speaking with Chase, who was 12 years old at the time, backstage at the MTV Movie Awards.
In the video, Combs can be heard asking: "Are you coming to the party tonight?" to which the young actress responds with an affirmative gesture. Us Weekly reportedly attempted to obtain comments from representatives of both parties without success. That same night of the ceremony, Combs and actor Ashton Kutcher presented Chase with the award for Best Villain for her role in "The Ring".
