A National Holiday Reveals a Political Rift

On June 20, 2026, Argentina commemorated the 206th anniversary of the death of Manuel Belgrano, the founding father who created the country's blue and white flag in 1812. While thousands of students pledged allegiance to the flag across the nation, the official ceremony at the National Flag Monument in Rosario became the stage for a visible display of internal government tensions.

President Javier Milei, the libertarian economist who won the presidency in 2023, arrived at the ceremony in a black pickup truck alongside his sister Karina Milei, who serves as Secretary General of the Presidency. He greeted his Cabinet members enthusiastically: Central Bank President Santiago Bausili, Minister of Deregulation Federico Sturzenegger, Minister of Human Capital Sandra Pettovello, Economy Minister Luis Caputo, Chief of Staff Manuel Adorni, and Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno. Senator Patricia Bullrich was also present.

The Deliberate Snub

What the official broadcast did not show became the main focus for journalists: Milei avoided any contact with Vice President Victoria Villarruel, who was seated in the section reserved for provincial authorities, just meters away from national officials.

Villarruel had not been invited by the presidential palace, but rather by Santa Fe Governor Maximiliano Pullaro. This exclusion follows a pattern: in 2025, Karina Milei excluded the Vice President from the May 25th Te Deum mass. The last time Milei and Villarruel shared a public event was during the opening of congressional sessions on March 1, 2026.

Public Show of Support

In stark contrast to his coldness toward Villarruel, Milei gave a warm embrace to Manuel Adorni, the Chief of Staff currently under investigation for alleged illicit enrichment. The gesture reinforced Milei's support for his close ally amid controversy over Adorni's reported wealth increase of 775% (from approximately $20 million Argentine pesos to $944 million pesos) and allegations he omitted USD 500,000 in his financial disclosure.

The President also embraced Patricia Bullrich, a key ally who leads the La Libertad Avanza bloc in the Senate. Bullrich was seen conversing with Adorni before the ceremony began, projecting an image of government unity in the face of mounting political pressure.

For context: Patricia Bullrich is the former Security Minister and current president of the PRO party, a center-right coalition that has allied with Milei's libertarian movement. Her presence signals continued collaboration between the parties.

Milei's Speech Honoring Belgrano

In his address, President Milei characterized Manuel Belgrano as "a great promoter of political and economic freedom" and defined the flag as "the visible representation of a cause: the cause of liberty."

Milei described Belgrano as "revolutionary in ideas and courageous in action" and presented him as "creator of the flag, military man of the May Revolution, and intellectual disseminator of ideas." He also declared Belgrano the "first Argentine economic liberal intellectual", aligning the historical figure with his own free-market ideology.

Who was Manuel Belgrano?

Manuel Belgrano (1770-1820) was an Argentine lawyer, economist, journalist, and military leader who played a crucial role in the independence movement. He created the Argentine flag on February 27, 1812, during the revolutionary wars. Belgrano donated much of his personal fortune to fund the independence army. He died on June 20, 1820, which is why Argentina commemorates Flag Day on this date.

The President concluded with a forceful message: "As long as there are Argentines willing to defend liberty, work, merit, property, and production, Manuel Belgrano's dream will live on" before exclaiming "Long live the homeland!"

Vice President Villarruel's Response

Minutes after the ceremony concluded, Victoria Villarruel spoke with the news outlet Infobae and launched a sharp criticism against Chief of Staff Manuel Adorni: "There is no one more at odds with Belgrano's values than Adorni."

The Vice President also described it as a "terrible message" that the presidential administration did not invite her to the ceremony, noting that Rosario is her "second home" and that she attended by invitation from Governor Pullaro. Villarruel, a long-time human rights advocate, has previously focused on victims of terrorism during Argentina's military dictatorship (1976-1983).

Local Authorities Speak

Maximiliano Pullaro, Governor of Santa Fe province, used the occasion to demand more infrastructure investment from the national government: "Santa Fe produces, exports, represents agriculture, industry, and commerce, and makes a huge contribution to national government resources."

Rosario Mayor Pablo Javkin highlighted the city's security improvements: "Together, the Nation, province, and municipality were finally able to start working with a plan. Fear changed sides and changed forever."

Political Context

The ceremony took place amid significant political pressure on the Milei administration:
