The afternoon of Monday, June 22, 2026 turned into tragedy for Mar del Plata, Argentina's most famous beach resort city. A bus from line 532 mounted the sidewalk on Boulevard Patricio Peralta Ramos, near the skatepark, and struck several people waiting at the bus stop. The accident occurred just after 7 PM, according to police sources.
Mar del Plata is located about 400 km (250 miles) southeast of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. It's the most popular coastal destination for Argentine tourists during summer. Boulevard Patricio Peralta Ramos is a major avenue that runs along the city's coastline.
The impact was devastating: some victims became trapped under the bus, requiring a complex rescue operation with specialized cutting equipment and hydraulic tools to free the injured.
Sadly, an 18-year-old woman was confirmed dead due to injuries sustained in the impact. The young woman was at the bus stop when the bus lost control.
Her identity was not disclosed out of respect for her family.
Six people were transported to the Hospital Interzonal General de Agudos (HIGA) of Mar del Plata, the city's main public hospital:
Prosecutor Germán Vera Tapia, from the Negligent Crimes division, was immediately notified and ordered the first investigative measures. According to preliminary reports being considered by investigators, the bus may have suffered a malfunction in the power steering or brake system.
The driver, who remains detained, lost control under circumstances still being investigated. The judicial case was labeled "Negligent homicide and Negligent injuries" (in Argentine law, this refers to crimes committed without intent but with negligence or carelessness).
A major emergency response was deployed with the participation of:
Traffic in the direction of La Perla (a neighborhood north of downtown) was interrupted during the rescue operation.
The Buenos Aires Province Ministry of Health reported that all patients are receiving medical attention from emergency, guard, diagnostic and traumatology teams at the hospital, who continue evaluating their clinical evolution.
A new press release with updates on the victims' health status was announced for Tuesday, June 23 at 9:30 AM.
