A Tragedy That Shocked an Entire Community

On June 22, 2026, a tragic road accident in the province of La Pampa claimed the lives of four sisters who were traveling toward Santa Rosa to care for a sick family member. The incident occurred at a location known as Bajo Giuliani, a natural depression about 10 kilometers south of the provincial capital, where rainwater accumulates forming a lagoon.

According to official sources, the crash took place at the intersection of Provincial Route 14 and National Route 35. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle—a Ford EcoSport with five occupants—lost control, crossed the roadway, broke through the guardrail, and ended up submerged in water at 3°C (37°F).

The Sole Survivor

The driver, identified as Dominga Fortunata Sosa (49), was the only survivor of the crash. She is currently in shock, receiving medical and psychological care. Authorities have not yet been able to take her full statement due to the trauma she suffered.

The Rescue Operation

The rescue was complex due to the depth of the water and access difficulties. Personnel from La Pampa Police, Firefighters, the Medical Emergency System (SEM), Civil Defense, and the Coast Guard all participated. Traffic on National Route 35 remained restricted for several hours.

Initial theories suggest the driver may not have noticed the end of the road at a “T-shaped” intersection in an area without street lighting, preventing her from braking in time.

A Community in Mourning

The town of 25 de Mayo, located over 400 kilometers from Santa Rosa, was deeply affected. Two of the sisters had direct ties to the local hospital. A coworker, María Emilia Barrionuevo, wrote on social media: “Such profound sadness envelops us. We can only be grateful to have shared the path with you and forever treasure the memories, laughter, and love you gave us.”

The tragedy occurred during celebrations for Argentina's World Cup 2026 victory, creating an even more painful contrast for the community.

Context: A Dangerous Location

Bajo Giuliani is a natural depression that accumulates water after rainfall. The area also houses a wastewater treatment plant for the provincial capital. The lack of lighting at the intersection of Routes 14 and 35 appears to have been a key factor—a problem residents have been reporting for some time.

Geographic Context for International Readers
