The Argentine Chamber of Deputies approved a payment of USD 171 million to vulture funds during a session heavily overshadowed by the political crisis surrounding Presidential Spokesperson Manuel Adorni.
This approval comes at a critical juncture for the administration of President Javier Milei. Manuel Adorni is currently facing a motion for censorship. The motion has already gathered 120 of the 129 required signatures in the Lower House. The scandal, widely known as AdorniGate, questions the sudden increase in Adorni's assets, which rose from $20 million to $944 million, representing a 775% increase.
The term 'vulture funds' refers to investment funds that buy sovereign debt of countries in financial distress at a deeply discounted price on the secondary market. They then litigate to recover the full face value of the debt plus interest, often targeting nations like Argentina which have a history of default. In this case, the USD 171 million covers payments to 'holdout' creditors who did not participate in previous debt restructurings following Argentina's defaults in 2001 and 2014.
A session scheduled for June 25, 2026, intended to question Adorni, failed due to a lack of quorum. Only 117 deputies were present, short of the 129 needed. According to parliamentary sources, the absence was a result of political agreements between the ruling party and provincial blocs. The debate has been moved to the Constitutional Affairs Committee starting June 30, 2026.
Amidst the scandal, President Javier Milei appointed Adrián Ravier as the new Presidential Spokesperson. Ravier, a national deputy for La Pampa province and a disciple of economist Jesús Huerta de Soto, replaces Adorni. Adorni remains as Chief of Cabinet but with reduced functions. Additionally, Javier Lanani resigned from the Press Secretariat after two and a half years in the role.
