A Historic Polar Wave Affects Mendoza, Argentina

Mendoza, one of Argentina's most important wine-producing provinces located at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, is experiencing a polar wave that will keep temperatures below freezing in the coming days. According to the National Weather Service (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional - SMN), on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, temperatures ranged between 1°C and 11°C (34°F and 52°F), with overcast skies and no precipitation, but the worst is yet to come.

For Wednesday, July 1st, a high of only 7°C (45°F) and a low of 1°C (34°F) is forecast. By Thursday, July 2nd, temperatures could drop to -5°C (23°F) in some areas of the province, as reported by Mendoza's General Directorate of Schools (DGE).

Education Minister Tadeo García Zalazar explained that a monitoring protocol is being maintained with Civil Defense and that no province in the country anticipates advance school closures.

What Does an Orange Alert Mean?

The SMN classifies weather alerts into three levels:

  • Yellow Alert: Possible weather events capable of causing damage and momentary disruption of daily activities. Risk for vulnerable groups.
  • Orange Alert: Dangerous weather phenomena for society, life, property, and the environment. Very dangerous temperatures for at-risk groups.
  • Red Alert: Exceptional phenomena with potential to cause emergencies or disasters. Affects all people, including healthy individuals.

About Mendoza and This Weather Event

Mendoza is a province in western Argentina, famous worldwide for its wine production, particularly Malbec. Located at the base of the Andes Mountains (the longest continental mountain range in the world), the region typically enjoys a dry climate with warm summers and mild winters. However, polar waves from the south can bring extreme cold and snow, even to lower elevations.

Sleet ("aguanieve" in Spanish) is a mixture of rain and snow that occurs when temperatures are near freezing. It can create hazardous conditions on roads and walkways, as it freezes into a thin layer of ice.

Recommendations for Residents and Visitors

During this polar wave, authorities recommend:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to cold, especially for children, seniors, and people with chronic illnesses.
  • Keep homes properly heated with adequate ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Check road conditions in mountain areas before traveling.
  • Follow instructions from Civil Defense and the SMN.
  • If visiting from abroad, dress in layers and be prepared for temperatures much colder than typical for this season.
