PlayStation announced that January 2028 will mark the definitive turning point toward digital format. Starting from that date, all new titles will be available exclusively on PlayStation Store and in physical stores only in digital format.
Exclusive digital format: New games can only be purchased and downloaded from the PlayStation digital store.
Existing games: Titles released in physical format before 2028 will continue to work normally.
"As consumer preferences increasingly move away from physical discs in favor of digital, the production of physical discs for all new video games released on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. New games will be available on PlayStation Store and in physical stores only in digital format."
The Japanese company emphasized that the general preference for digital media far exceeds that of physical discs, a trend that has accelerated in recent years.
Sony also announced that PlayStation Store for PS3 and PS Vita will permanently close in 2027, citing the difficulty for these systems to stay updated.
| Region | Console | Closure Date |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua | PS3 | August 2026 |
| Latin America and Middle East | PS3 | Late 2026 |
| Global | PS3 and PS Vita | July 2027 |
This decision adds to the previous announcement by Rockstar Games, which confirmed that GTA 6 (scheduled for release on November 19, 2026) will not have a physical disc edition. Instead, stores will sell a box with a code to digitally download the game.
The transition to digital was already underway, but PlayStation becomes the first platform to officially announce the total end of physical format for new releases.
