On July 3, 2026, the National Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (ANCEFN) released a statement expressing deep concern over the situation in Argentina's National Science and Technology System. The institution warned that recent measures could trigger a severe brain drain but also offered its collaboration to reorient public policies in the sector.
For international readers, it is important to note that science and technology in Argentina are considered State policies whose continuity must transcend different governments. The deterioration of capabilities built over decades compromises economic development, health, and national sovereignty. However, the scientific community remains determined to work together to reverse this situation.
According to a report by Econojournal on July 6, 2026, the layoffs announced at the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA)—Argentina's premier state-owned nuclear energy agency—left key areas virtually paralyzed. Two area managers formally requested the reinstatement of their personnel from the agency's president, Martín Porro, arguing that dismissing professionals jeopardized service contracts that generate substantial revenue.
In disagreement with the layoffs, three managers resigned from the institution: Karina Pierpauli (Research, Development and Innovation Area), Fabiana Gennari (Applied Research), and Alejandra Calvo (Research Center of the Argentine Neutron Beams Laboratory).
The Vice President of ANCEFN, Galo Soler Illia, addressed the loss of purchasing power among scientists, which is currently 40% to 45% below November 2023 levels. In an interview with Urbana Play, he explained that young researchers, despite having over a decade of training, earn below the poverty line and are forced to emigrate.
Soler Illia estimated that around 2,000 young researchers have left CONICET or requested leave in the last two and a half years, describing the situation as an 'exodus' that offers opportunities abroad but empties the country.
Despite the outlook, the Academy reiterated its commitment to national development and made its consultative capacities available to collaborate in urgently valorizing Argentine science.
On July 7, 2026, the Board of Directors of the Scientific and Technological Center (CCT) CONICET Santa Fe published an institutional manifesto in defense of the nuclear system. The Board repudiated the wave of layoffs at CNEA and the dismantling process threatening sovereign projects such as the CAREM reactor, the RA-10, and the production of radioisotopes for public health.
From CONICET Santa Fe, they demanded the immediate reinstatement of affected personnel and the allocation of necessary budgets, reaffirming that 'scientific and technological sovereignty is not negotiable'. The scientific community remains united and optimistic that dialogue and the recognition of their decades of effort will allow them to resume the path of independent technological development.
